What is sports physiotherapy?
Athletes usually put a lot of stress on their muscles, joints and bones in order to achieve the high performance levels they require. This can sometimes lead to injuries that affects their performance and ability to compete.
Sports physiotherapy treats these injuries specific to sports people, addressing both acute and chronic injuries. It doesn’t only help athletes recover from injuries, but it also provides education in order to avoid further injury in the future.
If you have recently suffered a sports injury, the most important thing you should do is rest. Avoid doing any sport that will aggravate the pain until you can seek treatment with your sport physiotherapist and if your injury is a sprain or muscle tear, you can also apply ice on the affected area to reduce swelling. A compressive bandage and elevation of the injured area might also help control swelling in the first 48 hours.
